Description
A county jail is a local facility operated by a county government that holds individuals awaiting trial, sentencing, or serving sentences of a year or less. It is different from a state or federal prison, which houses longer-term offenders. County jails are used for both pretrial detainees and those convicted of misdemeanors or other short-term offenses.
